Inquiries About Rights To Present the Play “Perseverance.”

If you wish to present a reading or production of this play as part of your town or state's observation of the centennial of women getting the right to vote in 1920, here is how to go about it...

1) Email the playwright (me), Callie Kimball, through the Contact form on this site with the dates and venue, ticket price and number of seats (or as much information as you have) to start the conversation.

2) The play is in development. Please email me for the most recent draft.

3) In marketing the event, please make sure to include my name, Callie Kimball. This includes mentions on all social media platforms, and in the press. Be sure to let me know of your event so I can help promote it!

4) If you are not a theatre, and are not sure how to go about producing a play reading, you could always partner with a local theatre or college that has a theatre department. I'm happy to connect you with theatres or playmakers in your area if you're trying to cast your event. (Most actors and directors do ask for a small stipend in exchange for their time and talent, even if it's just to cover gas, so please keep that in mind.) Feel free to reach out to me with any questions about how to plan your event, and I will help as much as I can.

5) I'm happy to travel to readings, participate in talkbacks, and teach workshops on playwriting. Travel would need to be arranged. If travel costs are prohibitive, participation via video chat can be arranged.

6) No one may call their reading or production "the world premiere." This is because Portland Stage has commissioned the play, and are likely to produce it in the fall of 2020. Usually, a commissioning theatre doesn't want the play presented prior to their production, but since this play is particularly timely, they (we) encourage theatres or organizations to present the play whenever it makes sense for them. Simply don't call it "The world premiere of Perseverance by Callie Kimball." Perhaps call it "Perseverance, a new play by Callie Kimball."

7) In writing this play, the input of historians was sought. Additionally, considerable research was conducted using original sources, scholarly essays, and books, in order to respectfully approach and present the complex and troubling intersectional challenges during the decades-long (and ongoing) fight for women’s equality. There is an extensive (but by no means exhaustive) bibliography of source material at the end of the script!

8) If there is a written program for the event, please include the following somewhere prominently: "Commissioned and developed by the Maine Suffrage Centennial Collaborative and by Portland Stage."
